Doing It Yourself
If you're set on handling this yourself, a single cracked panel on a sectional door built around 1989 is usually a bolt-out, bolt-in job - these doors use standard hinge spacing that most hardware suppliers still carry, unlike some of the older flush-panel doors on Carson City's earliest streets where matching an exact profile gets harder. The catch is finding the exact color and rib pattern; factory doors from that era vary by batch, and a mismatched panel on an otherwise clean door looks worse than the dent did. Before you order anything, measure panel height and the full door width, and check whether your door uses a standard 2-inch or a thicker insulated section - this region's cold-winter climate means a fair number of homes here were built with insulated steel, which weighs more and needs the right hinge hardware to match. One honest limit: we don't sell single panels over the counter for DIY pickup. We quote and install as a job, because torsion spring tension has to be reset correctly once a heavier insulated panel goes in, and that's not a step to guess at.
What Can Go Wrong
The most common failure on these late-1980s doors is bottom panel rot or denting from a plow hit or a trailer backing in wrong - the bottom section takes the abuse. Because the regional climate runs cold and severe through winter, a cracked panel seam lets moisture into the insulation core, and a soft, swelling panel is worse than a dented one because the whole section needs replacing, not just a surface patch. We also see hinge tear-out where a panel has flexed too many times around a bent section - the screws pull loose from softened steel edges. Garage doors on homes built close to 1989 sometimes still run original rollers and hinges even after a panel swap, and mixing a new panel with worn 35-year-old hardware can throw the whole door out of alignment within a season. If the track itself got bent in the same impact that cracked the panel, panel replacement alone won't fix the door - that's a separate repair, and we'll tell you plainly if that's what we're looking at rather than selling a panel that won't solve the binding.
